My Favorite FREE Online Reading for Kids
These are resources I love incorporating into my instruction. They offer engaging and high interest texts. In fact, I use these on a daily basis during distance learning! My reluctant readers get excited about reading thanks to these online texts!
- EPIC Books feature popular ebooks for kids. Teachers can easily set up a classroom account to provide students with easy access to books!
- Newsela has high-interest articles on current events and popular topics. The best part is the articles are available at various reading levels to easily differentiate for your students. There is a paid option if you want to assign texts and comprehension questions to students (but I can do everything I want to do with the free version!)
- ReadWorks offers free passages for students in grades K-12. The passages are available at different reading levels for differentiation. They can be assigned to students along with comprehension questions.
- Storyline Online has celebrities reading aloud popular picture books! They also include teaching guides for ideas of how to use the book with students.
- Vooks offers access to its online books for free for a year.

- Audible offers a large selection of free audiobooks.
- CommonLit has passages for grades 3-10 once you set up an account.
- Ducksters provides fun facts on various history, geography, and science topics.
- Flyleaf Publishing offers free ebooks for early readers organized by featured phonics skills.
- FunBrain offers ebook versions of popular titles and games for kids.
- National Geographic for Kids has articles, videos, and games.
- Oxford Owl has ebooks you can search through by age, reading level, or book type.
- Reading Vine has leveled passages that you can search by grade level or literacy skill.
- Unite for Literacy has ebooks for early readers.
- Wonderopolis helps students search for answers to their questions with engaging content.
- Youngzine is an online magazine for kids.
Online Book Subscriptions Worth Buying
While we all love FREE resources, there are some subscriptions that are worth purchasing. Or asking your administration to purchase for you! These are valuable resources worth looking into more.
- Bookflix by Scholastic is ideal for engaging fiction and nonfiction paired passages.
- MyOn provides students with personalized book recommendations based on their interests and reading level. Teachers can also assign books and corresponding activities to students. I personally love the ability to easily annotate the text with students!
- Literacy Footprints by Pioneer Valley has been a complete lifesaver for primary teachers during distance learning. Their online books make it easy to continue guided reading as you would in the classroom!
- Raz-Kids allows teachers to easily set up their classrooms and assign students’ books at their independent levels. This is perfect for independent reading or additional reading practice at home.
