4 Types of Reading Mini-lessons
Reading mini-lessons fall into four categories: management, literary analysis, strategies & skills, and writing about reading. We’ll explore these categories more in-depth and provide you with examples of each.

Management
These mini-lessons explicitly teach the classroom routines required for students’ self-management and productivity. They’re typically taught at the beginning of the year or as needed throughout the year. (Since we all realize students need occasional reminders about our classroom routines!) These management systems help students work independently during reading workshop. This allows you to work with small groups or students individually during conferences.
Examples of Management Mini-lessons
- Selecting books from the classroom library
- Finding good fit books
- Knowing when to abandon a book
- Engaging in independent reading
- How do use a reader’s notebook
Literary Analysis
These lessons are intended to build students’ knowledge of the genres and elements of fiction and nonfiction texts. This also includes the analysis of the plot and character development within fiction texts. Literary Analysis lessons help students think critically about the text and express their thinking.
Examples of Literary Analysis Mini-lessons
- Recognizing the characteristics of a specific genre
- Analyzing how a character changes throughout the book
- Engaging in meaningful discussions during book clubs
Strategies and Skills
These lessons provide explicit instruction for the implementation of various skills and strategies. These are the strategic actions that occur within our minds as we read. They’re intended to help students grow as independent readers who apply the strategies with any text.
Examples of Strategies and Skills Mini-lessons
- Asking questions while reading
- Checking for understanding while reading
- Evaluating the credibility of a source found on the internet
Writing About Reading
The lessons are centered around the use of a reader’s notebook. They’re intended to help students use this tool to reflect on the reading and document their reading behaviors.
Examples of Writing About Reading Mini-lessons
- How to write a book recommendation
- Writing a summary with the important information
- Using a quick sketch to show thinking about the text
